Amber 31422 is the fifth episode of the third season of FRINGE. It first aired on November 04, 2010. The alternate Fringe team has difficulty cracking the sophisticated escape of two brothers from a quarantined area. Secretary Bishop continues his memory experimentation with Olivia in the sensory-deprivation tank. Visions of Peter continue to haunt Olivia as she struggles with her new identity

Synopsis

Prologue
At the Department of Defense, Olivia receives a routine check-up from Brandon following her induced mental breakdown from eight days prior. Secretary Bishop arrives and asks her to voluntarily participate in an experiment designed to exploit her ability to travel safely between universes. Olivia, still not aware of her true identity, says nothing.
alt-DoD Headquarters

Olivia unzips her bag and reaches for a medicine bottle. She takes out her last red pill and ingests it. She looks around, opens a closet and Peter appears in the mirror. While Olivia is getting dressed, Peter reminds her that she only agrees to do the experiment because she wants to go back to normal, which is impossible since she is not the Olivia that she thinks she is. Olivia closes the closet and the vision of Peter is gone.

In the quarantined Franklin Street Station subway in Brooklyn, New York, two men cut through a wall of amber. They remove a block of the amber and lay it in the ground. They continue to cut out the solidified amber, revealing a man inside. The man is not breathing. Joshua Rose asks for a syringe and injected into his twin brother. Using a portable defibrillator, Mark Wilner shocks the heart of Matthew Rose but nothing happens. Joshua Rose applies a cardiac compression on his twin brother. A breach alarm goes off and Joshua Rose gets desperate, pounding on the chest of his twin brother. After a successful resuscitation, Wilner removes the remaining quarantine amber from Matthew's body. As they prepare for their escape, Wilner's foot got caught with the amber quarantine. Joshua Rose tries to pull out of his friend. Unable to help Wilner out of the amber quarantine, Joshua Rose decides to help his twin brother. Joshua apologizes to Wilner, leaving him pleading for help. Wilner is now fully encased in the amber.

ACT I

Lincoln Lee notices sophisticated tech in the breach scene and assumes that the looters attempts to steal valuables from amber victims. Olivia arrives late, blaming the traffic. Lincoln advises her not to take the Nixon Parkway. The team watches a
Rift At Central Park Reservoir
documentary video of the amber quarantine. The video shows a micro black hole in central Manhatan. In 1989, scientists developed a substance called Amber 31422 to contain the expansion of isolated tears in the fabric of the universe. Agent Francis requests to fastforward the video. He recognizes a new face in the quarantine area - the thief - who got caught in the reseal. Olivia takes a picture of the face and finds the identity of the thief - Mark Wilner, a small time crook. Lincoln picks up a piece of the broken amber. He notices an impression of a face on the amber.

In a classy, upscale bar, Secretary Bishop is looking at old newspaper clips bearing the news about Peter's mysterious disappearance. Colonel Broyles approaches the secretary. Secretary Bishop somberly recalls developing Amber 31422. The protocol was first instigated on October 17, 1989 and he remembers that on the very same day, the Harvard Yard was sealed with amber. He laments that hundreds have been trapped since then. He tells Colonel Broyles that the amber victims can be revived and resuscitated. This knowledge, however, should be kept away from the public. Not only, will it cause a revolt but also removing the victims from the amber will weaken the structural integrity of the amber. Broyles assures that the case will be solved and kept away from the public. Secretary Bishop also informs about Olivia's agreement to the tests. Broyles will report back to the secretary if he notices any unusual behavior.

The Fringe team cast a mold from the collected amber piece. Facial recognition identifies the quarantine victim as Joshua Rose. Colonel Broyles informs the team that four years ago, Rose uses a device, which enables him to access vaults without setting off the alarms. This causes molecular degradation - a man-made breach - requiring a quarantine in each bank he accessed. Joshua Rose's last job was the bank above Franklin Station, he was trapped in an amber quarantine, but now taken out and revived. Broyles directs the team to his apartment as the first place of their investigation.

Matthew Rose, lying in the bed and weak, is advised by his twin brother to get some more rest. Joshua Rose informs Danielle that his twin brother needs some more time to recover. Upset and disturbed, Danielle walks away.

Rose Leaves A Booby Trap For The Team
The Fringe team walks along the hallway of the building while Agent Francis recalls his first partner, who got caught in the amber quarantine. Lincoln Lee posted a notice in the door and breaks the lock of the door. Olivia checks out a picture of a twin and a vision of Peter asks her if that looks familiar - two people who look exactly alike. Olivia puts down the picture frame and asks Lincoln information on Rose. Lincoln says that Joshua has no kids, never got married and that his parents are dead. He has a cooperative twin brother, an accountant. Agent Francis notices a crack in the wall and calls out to the team. In a small room, Lincoln Lee recognizes items that can make a Negative Matter Ring, a device that is able to emit high frequency vibrations to allow Rose to walk through walls. Olivia hears a faint whirring sound. They bolt out as the place explodes.

ACT II

At the Fringe Division headquarters, the wounds of the team are being treated.
Agent Francis & Freind - Setting The Bone
Colonel Broyles walks in and wonders what happened to the Fringe team. Agent Francis acknowledges that Olivia saved their lives. Colonel Broyles complements her and confirms that the compound found in Rose's apartment is used in the making of a Negative Matter Ring. Agent Francis teases Lincoln Lee as he gloats. The nurse closes the curtain and leaves Olivia alone in a cubicle. Olivia opens a medicine cabinet. She takes out a bottle, ingests some pills and hides the bottle in her pocket. Lincoln Lee calls out Olivia's name and opens up the curtain to inform her that they need to talk to Joshua's brother. Olivia sits down on the bed.

Olivia and Lincoln arrive at the Rose residence in Nanuet, New York. Joshua Rose stands up and approaches Olivia and Lincoln, who calls him as Matthew. Lincoln inquires the whereabouts of his twin brother. Joshua explains that his brother's action hurt people and he would know better than to contact him. He further reiterates to Olivia that not because they look alike, they have anything in common. While Olivia and Lincoln approaches the car, Olivia's beeper goes off telling her that the tests are ready. Lincoln expresses concern for Olivia's welfare, but she assures her that she is okay. Joshua Rose goes to the back of the house and opens up the door. Inside the room is Matthew Rose. Matthew takes out the tubes connected to him and asks for Danielle. Joshua replies that she's at the store. Feeling guilty, Joshua recalls that Matthew tries to stop him from robbing the bank, and as a result, gets trapped in the amber. Danielle steps into the room, Matthew stands up and they kiss. Danielle bursts out with tears as she tells her that their sons are big. Matthew hugs his wife tightly, saying it's okay. Joshua watches the reunion and then leaves them alone.

At the lab, Secretary Bishop explains that Olivia are genetically similar to her alternate self and therefore, theoretically, she have the same ability to cross over to the other side. Olivia plunges into the isolation tank. Secretary Bishop orders Brandon to close the tank and starts injecting the drugs into Olivia's system. After about four and a half hours, Secretary Bishop asks Brandon to increase the drug dosages. Olivia's vital signs suddenly becomes critical and Secretary Bishop notices in the screen an erratic Olivia then the visual connection is lost.

Out of nowhere, Olivia appears in a gift shop. A snowglobe is knocked down and shatters into pieces. A soaking wet Olivia looks around and sees a kid. A lady finds a broken snowglobe and reprimands Cameron. Back at the lab, Brandon reaches out for Olivia and yanks her out of the tank. She gasps and tells Secretary Bishop that she went somewhere and met a boy. Delighted, Secretary Bishop speculates that she crossed over.

ACT III

Researching The Suspect
← At Bolivia's apartment, Olivia is reviewing the case of Joshua Rose when all of a sudden, a vision of Peter shows up asking her that Secretary Bishop knew all along that she has the capability of crossing between universes and that's the reason why she is in that universe. Olivia ignores her vision and takes some more pills. Olivia hears someone knocking on her door. She looks at the peephole and opens the door. She is delighted to see her mother and gives her a hug. Marilyn reminds her daughter that it is Tuesday. Olivia apologizes for not making time for lunch. Concerned for her, Marilyn asks if she is okay. Olivia confesses that she is tired. A vision of Peter interrupts her of a story of Nina and Gina, twins with different intelligence but they both always get straight A's. Marilyn snaps out of her. Olivia realizes something; she apologizes to her mother for leaving her alone.

Olivia arrives in the Fringe Division headquarters and tells Broyles that the Rose twins switched places. She explains that Matthew was not angry or upset about Joshua's crimes; he was ashamed of guilt. Lincoln Lee scans Matthew's retina, confirming him as Matthew. Olivia is still unconvinced, she goes inside the interrogation room and accuses him of switching places with his twin brother. Olivia challenges Matthew, she asks him for infomation their meeting. Matthew manages to answer Olivia's question. Still unconvinced, Olivia thinks that the twin brothers shared the information. Colonel Broyles asks Olivia to leave the room. Outside, Olivia insists that she is right but Broyles reminds her that they cannot hold Matthew for a hunch.

Colonel Broyles receives a visitor, Marilyn. Marilyn is worried about Olivia, she thinks that it is too early for her to go back to work and that she is not herself. Furious about what had happened, Olivia bangs on the coffee machine. Lincoln approaches Olivia, informing her about a break-in at Langdon Chemicals. Olivia deduces that Joshua Rose is planning to use Ferrocene to make another heist. Broyles approaches the two and takes off Olivia from the case. Olivia insists that she is not crazy but her explanation is not accepted by Broyles. He asks her to go home.

ACT IV

Joshua Rose takes the call of Matthew Rose. He explains to his twin brother that one of the agents knew their switch. Joshua asks Matthew to run some errands while he figures a way out. Danielle confronts Joshua, and he explains to her how hard it is for Matthew to be trapped in the amber, stuck in his last thought. Joshua reminds Danielle that he has a plan, but she is unimpressed with it. She wants him to turn himself in. Danielle walks away and Joshua approaches the window, looking out and sees Matthew's two sons playing in the garden.

Olivia approaches Agent Farnsworth and asks her to run a scenario to identify which bank Joshua will likely to hit. Agent Farnsworth deduces that there are 37 likely targets based on the assumption that Joshua was taken out of the amber quarantine. Olivia explains to Agent Farnsworth that Joshua expresses shame and guilt for trapping his brother in the amber and therefore, he would not like to get more people to get hurt. This scenario allows Agent Farnsworth to narrow down to 3 banks.
Vault Access

In a tunnel, Joshua Rose attaches his Negative Matter Ring to the wall and starts up the equipment. Meanwhile, Olivia arrives to Riverdale Bank. She checks the door of the bank and finds that it is locked. She takes out her flashlight and moves down to the stairs. She finds the gates unlocked and goes in. The Negative Matter Ring creates high frequency vibration on the wall. Joshua prodded the wall with a steel pipe. Olivia continues down to the subway tunnel. She finds Joshua's equipment and a hole in the wall. Using a taser, Joshua immobilizes Olivia.

ACT V

At the Fringe Division headquarters, an anomalous energy signature is detected. Agent Farnsworth matches this Class Two breach to the event in 2006 caused by Joshua Rose. Rose's new target is the Riverdale Mutual Bank located in The Bronx. When Colonel Broyles is about to leave, Agent Farnsworth tells him that Olivia was right.

In the service tunnel, Matthew Rose finds an unconscious Olivia. He leans down and checks her pulse. He finds a hole in the wall of the tunnel created by his twin brother's device.

The Fringe team arrives in The Bronx. Agent Francis notices Olivia's car parked outside of the Riverdale Mutual Bank. Lincoln Lee reports to Colonel Broyles that the molecular degradation is increasing, and therefore, requires an amber quarantine. Agent Francis finds a busted lock on a subway gate and thinks that Olivia might get caught in the pending quarantine. Colonel Broyles gives Lee and Francis three minutes to find Olivia. The two run down into the subsurface tunnels. Agent Broyles looks up and an alarm goes off - Warning. Quarantine protocol imminent. Evacuate the area immediately.

Lincoln and Charlie find Olivia. Olivia finally regains her consciousness. Olivia tells Lee and Francis that Joshua is inside the bank, but there is no time... the three run out of the subway.

Inside the bank, Matthew confronts his brother, pleading for him to stop and that he does not need the money. Joshua asks Matthew to go. Failing to find his brother's tools, he realizes what is happening. Joshua wants to sacrifice himself. He needs to be in the amber because he does not want his brother to be experimented on. Matthew runs out of the subway tunnel while Joshua is left inside the bank, sealing him in the amber.

Colonel Broyles reminds Olivia of her breach in protocol, but compliments her for a good job. Olivia joins Lincoln and Charlie - happy.

Olivia visits the Rose residence. She tells Matthew about his brother's entrapment in the amber quarantine. Olivia extends a handshake and Matthew accepts it. She reveals a strip in her palm and challenges Matthew that he was the one trapped in the amber for the last four years. Matthew's son interrupts them, and this causes Olivia to change her mind. A vision of Peter shows up drawing similarities between Rose's situation and hers - trapped in that universe. In the car, Olivia fights back telling him that there is no way to prove his information - the fallen Twin towers, Rachel is alive, Ella's birthday. He reminds her that there is a way.

...And This Is Her On Drugs
Olivia goes back into the sensory deprivation tank. Brandon finds a dormant chemical bound
Memories From The Home Universe
into Olivia's brain since she was a child. The screen shows a critical sign and Olivia is back in the gift shop, breaking a snowglobe. Olivia walks around the shop and finds a postcard remembering the Twin Towers. She looks out of the window and sees the cityscape of Manhattan. Olivia approaches a phone and dials her sister's phone number. On the other end of the line is Ella, who is delighted to hear her aunt's voice on her birthday. The room begins to shake and Olivia vanishes. Brandon takes her out of the tank and when asked by Secretary Bishop what happened, she says that it didn't work. Nothing happened. Everything was black.

Quotes

"Nature doesn't recognize good and evil, Phillip. Nature only recognizes balance and imbalance. I intend to restore balance to our world. Whatever it takes." - Secretary Bishop (to Broyles, justifying his morally questionable actions)

"You know why you let him go, don't you? It's 'cause you can understand what he's going through. Trapped in that amber. It's just like you're trapped over here. Only difference is... nobody's going to save you. Only you can save yourself." - a vision of Peter (convincing Olivia that she is not from the alternate universe and has to believe in the few memories she retains of her original life)

Trivia

General
  • The Observer lingers fifteen feet to the left of Olivia's parked vehicle when Agent Francis informs Colonel Broyles that her car is parked near the Riverdale Mutual quarantine site.
  • Mister Wizard. Agent Francis calls Lincoln Lee - Mister Wizard, referencing Donald Jeffrey Herbert, the North American television personality who rose to fame as Mister Wizard - popularizing science education for children. In context, it appears that the alternate universe version was similarly popular for science.
Recurring Themes
  • Sensory Deprivation Tank. Olivia again enters the tank that deprives her of sensory inputs and allows her to isolate in her mind that which she hopes to access. Accessing John Scott's memory was her first attempt.
  • Harmonic Resonance. Joshua Rose uses a Negative Matter Ring to pass through a solid wall. Mitchell Loeb used similar technology (The Equation) (Safe) in this universe.
Cultural References
  • Quote. Lincoln Lee paraphrases a quote - "the stuff that dreams are made of" - and attributes Cary Grant. In this universe, Humphrey Bogart used the famous line in the movie The Maltese Falcon.
