Chief Petty Officer First Class Andrew Rusk died when a 9mm round was fired in to the side of his head. Under suspicion and in Federal custody, Former US Navy SEAL Jake Selleg claims responsibility for the act. He also states that Rusk's wife, Teresa Rusk, solicited the criminal act because of the physical abuse she endured at her husbands' hand.

Rusk had been assigned to the USS Gloucester, a large Ohio-class submarine with nuclear propulsion and long-range nuclear attack missiles. According to Navy liaison Lieutenant Commander Will Turlough, the Gloucester was shadowing a Russian naval exercise in North Korean waters six months before Rusk's death. A coolant line broke and causing a reactor leak, resulting in Rusk being locked in the engineering section for sixteen hours before the contamination could be vented. Rusk was airlifted to Pearl Harbor, and was given a highly experimental radiation inhibitor to save his life. He had been on medical leave since the incident.

Events indicate that he psychically bonded with the mind of Lisa Donovan, an aneurysm victim that was just taken off of life support, and died. The bond revived Donovan and she recovered her health. After several seizures and drug treatment in Walter's Lab, Rusk was able to dominate Lisa's inate will and physical actions. Aware of the crime against him by his wife, he sought revenge on her at their house. Armed and prepared to burn his wife to death, the Rusk- inhabited Lisa was captured.

Rusk appears to have abandoned Lisa's body when Peter motivated her suppressed will to re-assert itself. It also seems that Rusk was able to find another recently dead body to psychically bond with. A man with a fatal brain injury sits dead in a Times Square automobile accident, then awakens speaking Russian like Lisa, when she was bonded with Rusk.
