Same in Both Universes
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers are the same individuals in both universes.--Bolombia
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. After making the mistake of distracting Walternate's testing sequence in the Alternate Universe, which unbalanced the Universes, September attempted to correct the imbalance by saving Peter Bishop in our Universe. --Bolombia 20:28, 18 December 2010 (MST)
  2. September was told "You need to take action to restore balance." and "You will have an opportunity to fix this." by other observers outside the movie theatre in the episode Peter.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. Nothing has been seen, said, nor done to suggest this. It is more likely that September "saw" him crossover and knew what would happen, and knew what he had to do to save them.

The Immortals
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers have gone through the same experience that The Child went through when they were children, that is how September, December, July and August are immortal and have their unique abilities.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. They are put in a enclosed area for a predetermined period of time, and their unique biology allows them to survive and gain their unique abilities, and it's possible that their time there possibly effected their perception of time.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. Nothing has been seen, said, heard or done to suggest that they are put in an enclosed area for any length of time. - –DocH my edits
  2. Nothing has been seen, said, heard or done to suggest that they are immortal, regardless of their biology (unique OR standard issue as it may be). - –DocH my edits

Nonhumans
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers are not human.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. They don't seem to age, although Broyles showed Olivia many photos of The Observer throughout a large time span.
  2. Like the Shapeshifters (who are biological machines, not humans), the Observers have superior physical abilities and can interface their bodies with machines. In the episode "August", the titular character catches a bullet with his bare hands and then starts a car by pressing his finger against the ignition.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. They don't have eyebrows, but they do have hair follicles on their head.

Men in Black
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers are part of the Men in Black (MIB) from UFO legend.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. People who have had contact with MIB have reported them to be wearing plain black suits, sometimes with black hats, and to be completely devoid of distinguishing characteristics. They have also been known to have no discernible personality, to be completely lacking in "people skills," to have movement that appears at times mechanical, and in some cases to exhibit the ability to know what people they interact with are thinking.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. They don't seem to be part of any kind of organization nor government, they just seem to be part of their own government, their own organization.
  2. The MiB encounters say that they have hair, they wear sunglasses, and talk in outdated slang. The Observers do and have none of those things.

Twelve Observers
Described Hypothesis:
There are/were/will be twelve Observers
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. Being named after months points to the number twelve.
  2. 10 are seen watching outside the Statue of Liberty in "The Day We All Died". August was killed in "August" and the child seen in "Inner Child" appears to be the youngest of the Observers and will likely be named "January". This is a total of 12 distinct Observers now seen in the series. --JayJack 20:41, 25 July 2011 (CST)
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. In the episode "The Day We All Died" there are only 10 observers watching the Statue of Liberty.

Naming According to Seniority
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers are named according to seniority.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. July appears to be the youngest.
  2. December appears to be the eldest.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. 10 observers are seen outside the Statue of Liberty in "The Day We All Died". July is a middle month, and if this were true, would not be the youngest.

From the Fourth Dimension
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers are fourth dimensional humans, in third dimensional form.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. In August, what Brandon describes is the idea of a fourth dimension of relativity in time in physics.
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:

Are connected to the First People
Described Hypothesis:
They are the last of First People, plotting to recreate their own world or are their enemies, plotting to avoid thier returns. Most likely, they are members of the First People and observe the proceedings of First People's plan to return on the Earth.
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. Occam's razor: it's very unlikely on a single tv show that can exist two different and separate ancient-beyond-imagination-races.
  2. Observers' telephones (and other items) are somehow similar to the device: look ancient but are very technologically advanced
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. as needed

Observer Origins
Described Hypothesis:
Observers originate from an alternate timeline where the Nazis stole Robert Bischoff's ideas and won WWII -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. All Observers are not simply white, they make pale white guys look spray tanned. This indicates a program in the Observer's past to ensure racial purity (by killing the impure?). -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  2. The Observers are also all uniformly blue-eyed -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  3. The uniforms worn by the native police and military in "Letters of Transit" are reminiscent of those used by Germany in WWII. -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  4. The 2036 occupying Observers' attitudes towards the natives echo that of Aryan Master Race supremacists -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  5. If the Observers came from the show's timeline's future, invading their direct past would be like killing your grandfather before he could sire your father. It would create a paradox. -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  6. The show has already explored WWII, using Walter's father, Robert Bischoff, a German scientist and U.S. spy, whose research had implications in the creation of a gas that would kill people based on genetic markers. This is seen in "The Bishop Revival". If Hitler found out about this, the final solution would get a lot more effective. -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  7. The Observers have now been shown to be the bad guys, who better for them to be as far as instantly turning the audience against them and putting their past word into question? -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
     Contradictory Facts and Contradictory Evidence:
  1. There is no evidence that timelines actually branch out. We have actually seen only one timeline although two universes are involved -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  2. The Observers have not been portrayed in a Nazi-like manner other than in 'Letters of Transit -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  3. Neither the Observers' written script, nor their love of hot foods, nor water as an intoxicant seem indicative of a Nazi envisioned master race -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  4. Observers are too short to be the result of genetically inspired program to produce the Nazi envisioned Master Race -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .
  5. September and August are too nice to be Nazis -—The preceding unsigned comment was added by himo JR (talkcontribs) .

The Observers erased Peter in order to ensure the future where they take over
Described Hypothesis:
The Observers erased Peter because Peter and therefore Henry Dunham's existance would prevent their rise to power -luigi bros
     Supporting Facts And Supporting Evidence:
  1. The Observers are dedicated to keep balance, but will not stand for Peter's existence
  2. September has constantly intervened on Peter's behalf, and Walter stated in 2036 that September was a good guy. On top of that in the end of Brave New World September warns Walter that "They are coming"
  3. September stated that Henry's existence would have corrupted the timeline, and the Observers seem to want to preserve the future where they rule.
