About
Reiden Lake is a fictional body of water located near Schenectady in East-central New York State."Reiden Lake" was visited (There's More Than One Of Everything) by David Jones and his team. After unsuccessfully trying to locate, and pass through, a "soft spot" between parallel universes on two attempts elsewhere, he established a stable passage in the forest near Reiden Lake.
Olivia accurately determined that the lake was a likely passage point because of the bizarre events, and crimes that radiate outward from the location. She led the law enforcement raid on Jones, and intercepted him just as he was about to travel through the rift he had established.
Peter and Walter found their way to Reiden Lake with a mechanical device that could patch, or seal, the rift between the parallel universes. They arrived just as the tactical team was engaging Jones' forces. Peter and Olivia teamed-up and isolated Jones just as he was walking through the event horizon. Olivia shot Jones, to no effect, however, Peter activated the device and closed the rift as Jones was walking through it, bisecting Jones upper torso and skull.
The lake was addressed again in Grey Matters. Olivia suggested that Walter's abductors may haven taken him to the lake to learn of the technology to establish a portal between universes.Walter told Olivia about the incident that happened in 1985 - in Peter. In the backstory, Walter used Reiden Lake to open up a door between two universes and allowed him to bring Peter over to this side. It was believed that the body of water was able to buffer the energy created by the portal. Nina Sharp and Carla Warren went to the lake to try and stop Walter. Nina tried to restrain Walter as he passed through the portal that he had established. After he passed through, the portal shut down with Nina's arm on the other side of the event horizon. She kept her arm, but it was badly out of phase with this universe. When Walter successfully crossed back over with Peter in-tow, the ice cracked and the two fell in. The Observer rescued Walter and Peter before they drowned or froze. This incident is known as the Zero Event in the parallel universe and central to Secretary Bishop's ZFT (Over There, Part 1) and the Pearl Harbor event in his justification for war with our universe.
In his desire to go back home, young Peter Bishop smashes the frozen lake with a concrete block tied to a rope around his waist. Elizabeth dives in and saves the drowning boy. Peter is convinced that Walter abducted him from the world at the bottom of the lake (Subject 13).
In the adjusted timeline of Season 4:
Peter erupts from the surface of the Lake (Subject 9) as he returns to existence in the two known universes. The device that created the dangerous time chambers/bubbles (And Those We've Left Behind) only became operational when Peter returned to the Lake and the timeline.
The Chung family maintained a cabin at the Lake (Making Angels) and, only a few years ago, Neil Chung located the time-viewing device that The Observer presumably lost there in 1985.
Trivia
Reiden Lake is fictional, but Lake Otsego, west of Schenectady, New York, roughly approximates the locale.
