Introduction
The Man From The Other Side is the nineteenth episode of the second season of FRINGE. It first aired on April 22, 2010. Shape-shifters arrive in embryonic form and assume the lives of individuals key to opening a gateway between universes. Newton masterminds the effort in order to pull an important person from the alternate universe over to this side. Peter survives the aftermath of the gateway and figures out the only possible reason he survived.

Synopsis

Prologue
Late at night in the industrial district of Worcester, MA, Jill Redmond and her stoned boyfriend, Dave, sit in a car smoking and chatting near a seemingly abandoned warehouse. Dave feels vibrations shortly before a window on the second floor of the building bursts into pieces with a flash of light. Jill wants to leave but Dave decides to go inside and investigate the distrubance. Inside the warehouse, windows are breaking, lights are flashing and the air is gusting from the incursion that is taking place. Dave explores one of the inner offices and finds a

gelatinous mass writhing and growing on the floor. More curious than concerned, Dave grabs a shovel and touches the side of the embryonic mass. The mass surges slightly towards him, then begins to coagulate and turn a deep rich red in its' interior. Alerted to something behind him, Dave turns to see a better formed embryonic shape-shifter. The featureless being immediately snaps Dave's neck and plugs the prongs from a Shape Changing Device into the roof of Dave's mouth. It takes the prongs from the other side of the device, plugs them into its' mouth, then activates the device. The featureless humanoid quickly begins to morph into an identical replica of Dave. After donning Dave's clothes, the shape-shifter exits the warehouse and silently joins Jill in the car. She is scared, upset that Dave took so long and wants to leave. Seconds later she looks up to see a featureless shape-shifter exit the warehouse and head towards her car. Jill screams and the soldier that adopted Dave's features dives across the seat towards her.

ACT I

At the Bishop residence, Peter returns home with a paper grocery bag to find Walter hard at work re-arranging pictures in frames on the dining room table. Walter has been of the attitude lately that a well-ordered house is a sign of a well-ordered mind. Peter questions the repeated rearrangement of the photos - and the recent all night project of locating the perfect location for the laundry hamper. Peter has a more productive project scheduled for the two of them... baking a pecan pie. Walter privately studies a photo of he and his wife with their very young son. Walter wants to hold-off on the pie project and talk to Peter about something more serious, something Peter should know. Walter starts his speech, sharing that death is one of the hardest aspects of being a scientist -- that as much as he attempts to understanding the mechanisms of life -- death cannot be defeated. Peter's cell phone rings, interrupting Walter's planned disclosure. Olivia tells Peter that she is on the way over to pick them up. Walter says he'll get his field kit... his planned talk can wait. Walter leaves the room and Peter notices that the top picture in the stack of images that Walter was holding is that of the young Bishop Family.

Outside of the warehouse in Worcester, Broyles briefs the Science Team as they approach the car with Jill Redmond's corpse. Jill is behind the wheel with a broken neck and was found with three puncture wounds in the roof of her mouth. Olivia remembers that the last time they heard from Newton and his shape-shifters was down in New York. Peter figures they needed Jill's identity for something. Walter
Implanted Shape Changing Device
finds the narcotic cigarette that was being smoked in the car and compares its quality to what he grows. Peter jokes that Jill was in a happy place as a result of her narcotics use, but Olivia notes that none of her lipstick was on the cigarette... someone she was with must have been smoking it.

← Inside the warehouse in Worcester, the investigators find Dave dead on the floor in the room he encountered the shape-shifting soldier. Walter inspects Dave's mouth and finds the puncture marks associated with the morphing device. Peter finds an partially developed shape-shifter covered with cardboard boxes in the corner of the room. Walter thinks it looks like a beanbag chair he had almost thirty years prior. Olivia and Peter can't figure out why the two young adults were the target - the shape changing soldiers normally assume the identity of someone that has specific access to something or someone they need for the mission they are on. Walter scalpels into the top of the undeveloped creature and observes that it oozes mercurial blood, like the others before it. Walter reaches through the large incision he made and extracts the shape changing device that was sent with it.

ACT II

The two shapeshifters that survived the warehouse and assumed the appearance of Jill and Dave enter Leary's Camera shop and are met by Thomas Newton. They greet Newton with the code phrase he needs to hear to begin their mission. Newton says that Mister Secretary told him to expect three soldiers, then learns the news that the third soldier didn't survive the transition at the warehouse.

In Walter's lab, the team watches as Walter autopsies
Not Quite Dead Yet
the shape-shifters embryonic remains. He surmises that since they are partly mechanical, they can pass between universes in a way that humans can't. Olivia figures that two embryos did manage to hatch. Peter adds that Jill and Dave simply must have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Olivia takes a cell phone call from Broyles and learns of an electrical disturbance that occurred near the crime scene the night before. Astrid downloads the file for Olivia and the team reviews it. It occurred at the approximately the same time the Medical Examiner estimated Jill and Dave died the night before. The interfering television signal appears to have originated in the alternate universe. As they slow the video down, the audio portion reveals what sounds like language. Peter guesses that the shape-shifters may be getting orders, since they are soldiers. Astrid suggests engaging the code-breakers at the FBI. Olivia has better idea

At Massivie Dynamic, Olivia and Peter ask Brandon to help analyze the recorded anomaly. Brandon immediately recognizes the sound is not a language, but trigonometric math. In this case it sounds like radio waves emitted during a solar flare. The Astronomical Division at Masssive Dynamic detected a surge in solar activity at about the same time as the incident at the warehouse, but it can't be the radio waves on the recording - they are not synchronized the detected activity. Olivia shares her theory that the radio waves were generated in a parallel universe. Brandon is intrigued and adds that the two universes might be slightly misaligned, but that on rare occasion they may come into perfect alignment. He compares the data from both observations and deduces that the universes will align at 3:31 PM the following day.

In a quiet storage room, Newton gives his new shape-shifting soldiers their mission orders. Jill will assume the identity of Ben McCallister, Dave will target David Wu. Newton produces files for each of the soldiers to review and equipment boxes with everything else they will need. Jill is concerned about the potential for failure since they are missing a team member they had planned to utilize. Newton tells her he has no intention of aborting the mission - if they stop now, they won't have another opportunity for seven months. Newton adds that he will handle the Verona assignment, the target that the third shape-shifter was intended to engage.

ACT III

Chestnut Hill, MA. In the parking lot outside of Pinewood Savings Bank, Ben McCallister approaches his vehicle and unlocks the door. Just as he is about to enter his car, shape-shifter Jill catches his attention and asks for directions to Franklin Street. After some quick verbal directions from McCallister, Jill still seems confused, so he politely offers to write down his directions for her. He produces a pen and she offers a piece of paper for him to use. The paper has his name and image on it, and he immediately realizes he is facing some sort of confrontation as she sternly stares at him.

In Walter's lab, Peter returns and ask Astrid where Walter is. Astrid says that Walter is outside trying to jog his memory by counting cars, a mundane task that might help him remember what he told Thomas Newton about building a door between universes. Astrid steps away on a chore and Peter finds the photo of the young Bishop family that Walter has been focusing on recently. Peter joins Olivia as she completes paperwork in her office. He tells her he thinks he knows why Walter has been acting strange recently - carrying around a family photo from the early 1980's. Peter thinks Walter wants to talk to me about how his mother died... not in a car crash, but by suicide. Olivia, aware of Walter's actual motives, reminds Peter that his father loves him very much. Walter rushes into the office with Astrid in-tow. Walter believes he knows how to figure out what the shape-shifters are doing... but first he needs six car batteries, a voltage transformer, several yards of ten-gauge electrical wire and a fresh corpse - dead no more than two days.

Harmonic Rod For The Vault
← At Pinewood Savings Bank, Thomas Newton informs a teller he is there to see the manager. Newton is soon conversing with Ben McCallister. The shape-shifter has abandoned the Jill Redmond identity and has assumed that of a bank manager. Newton and his soldier continue their previous conversation on how to handle the Verona portion of their mission. McCallister leads the way into the safety deposit box vault on the bank's business floor. He opens-up the equipment box that he received early from Newton and removes a long metal cylinder. Newton uses a handheld locator to find a specific point on the floor of the vault, then uses a black felt pen to make a small mark in the floor. McCallister hands the cylinder to Newton then squeezes some gel from a tube onto the mark. Newton activates the cylinder as the gel burns a hole in the solid floor. The bank teller interrupts the proceedings to ask for an overdraft approval from her manager. Newton and McCallister both react calmly to cover their actions... Newton steps on the small hole in the floor. McCallister promises his teller he will help her shortly. After the teller leaves the vault, Newton hands the metal cylinder back to McCallister with the reminder to make sure the device remains undisturbed.
Back in Walter's Lab, all of the equipment that he requested is being set-up by the team. Astrid questions their chances. Walter assures her that, since the embryonic shape-shifter is part mechanical, all they need to do is pump enough electricity into it to be able to restart it - like jump-starting a car. The corpse will provide an identity for the shape-shifter to assume, so it can be interrogated. They start

adding power to the embryo, but have to increase power several times to get any results. On a third attempt, a fuse blows, the lights in the lab go out and the embryo starts to glow orange and red. The fetal shape-shifter within begins to move and try and free itself from its' encasement. The half developed mechano-organic hybrid sits-up briefly, then reclines and goes silent. Walter thinks he may have damaged it somehow with the exploratory incision he made to retrieve the shape changing device stored with the embryo. Peter quickly places the three-pronged plug into the palate of the corpse. Walter does the same to the deformed embryo and is startled when it immediately bolts to life. Olivia draws her pistol. The creature asks for help and starts mumbling about Newton - Daniel Verona - AB negative blood - Cellular polarity.... Olivia demands to know what is going to happen at 3:31 tomorrow afternoon. The deformed shifter grows weaker, looks up at Walter, seems to recognize him, then takes Walter's hand and apologizes to him just as it dies.

ACT IV

Evening time In Midtown Boston. Olivia and other FBI agents intercept Daniel Verona as he exits a grocery store carrying a paper bag.
Fake Heart Attack
At the intersection of Longwood and Huntington, Thomas Newton dials emergency services from a public pay phone. Newton reports that a man fitting his description is having a heart attack, then hangs-up before giving any additional information to the dispatcher. Newton exits the phone booth, then swallows a black capsule he has been keeping in a small silver case. A few seconds after swallowing the capsule, Newton begins to convulse, collapses to the ground and starts to froth at the mouth. Nearby pedestrians rush to his aid and recognize his need for emergency medical services. →

At the Federal Building, Olivia and Broyles watch from the observation room as a medical technician draws red blood from Daniel Verona in the adjacent interrogation room. Verona does not appear to be a shape-shifter, but Broyles wants some additional testing performed anyway. Maybe they intercepted Verona before Newton could get to him. Olivia wonders why a Medical Examiner from Boston General would be targeted by the shape-shifters.

In Boston General Hospital, an orderly rolls a guerney with a large body bag on it into a secure room. She deposits the fresh corpse with the dozen of other corpses in the room, then leaves. Immediately, the zipper on the body bag she just delivered begins to jiggle open. Inside, Thomas Newton slides the zipper completely open, then sits-up. He removes the handheld locator from his pocket and activates it along with a metal cylinder similar to the one that was left in the bank vault.

At the Bishop's residence, Peter learns the details about Daniel Verona over the phone from Olivia. In the kitchen, Walter takes out his frustration on a loaf of unsliced bread - he should have been more careful with his initial dissection of the embryonic shape-shifter. The damage he did was stupid and inexcusable, and may have cost the team valuable information. Peter calms his father down and asks his dad to get some rest as well. The endearment - dad - tugs on Walter's heartstrings a bit, since Peter always refers to him by his first name. As Peter saunters off for some sleep, Walter declares that he thinks he knows what Newton is planning to do. A few hours later, just after daybreak, Olivia arrives to apologies for getting her out of bed. The Bishops have
Trans-Dimensional Physics 101
set-up a scientific demonstration on the dining room table that represents the same geometry and harmonic vibrations that Walter and William Bell used to transfer a car to the alternate universe decades earlier. Walter places a toy car on an elevated platform, then activates three harmonic rods arranged in an equilateral triangle around the toy. The harmonics cause the toy to vibrate at a specific and the car moves off the platform and down a ramp to Peter. The same principles were used by Newton when he transfered an entire building into this universe, and sent one from here, over there - probably when the two universe were harmonically synchronized. Olivia wants to know what Newton intends to exchange between universes... and why. Walter suppose that since they have already transfered something as large as a building, anything that would fit inside the building, like a machine, could be sent. Peter adds - they could send an Army. Olivia figures they have tens hours to figure out where the center of the harmonic triangle is that Newton intends to make his exchange between universes.

ACT V

The shape-shifter in the form of Lineman Wu, is up a powerpole and planting the third harmonic device. He is well away from Boston on the far side of the Charles River. A supervisor with the utility company is trying to contact the real Wu, who should be fixing a transformer at Third and Spencer. The shape-shifter just ignores the radio call for his victim.

In the lab, Walter brings out a large area map to try and determine where Newton would
Transfer Point
have to specifically locate the three harmonic rods. Peter and Olivia determine that Verona's home and Boston General are close enough to count as the same location. Astrid adds to the mapping effort with new information. Banker McCallister from Pinewood Savings is another shape-shifter victim. Peters plot that bank on the map. Walter reminds him that the triangle needed for the harmonics to work has to be equilateral, leaving only two possible points to calculate for placement of the device, and two points for Newton to open his gatweway... Hyde Park, or on the Charles River. Peter believes the park is more likely, but Olivia, remembering Walter's use of Reiden Lake to absorb excess energy (Peter), brings up that reasoning when Walter does not volunteer it. Walter concurs and Olivia notifies the office that they are onto something.

Newton has deployed his equipment on one side of the river and studies the empty gap between the two main towers of the old bridge. The two shape-shifters, still imitating Wu and McCallister, approach with a positive status report. A police vehicle on the opposite side of the bridge pulls-up and sounds a warning alarm. Newton directs his soldiers to deal with the police car.

Olivia drives quickly to the bridge with the Bishops and the equipment Walter needs to shutdown Newton's procedure. She is on the phone to Broyles, who is hurrying through the parking garage to his vehicle with additional agents. He tells her that he has agents on the way to the morgue and the bank, and that the Boston Police have been deployed to the Andrews Avenue Bridge. Walter explains to the team as they drive that vibrations are composed of shock waves and, like sound waves, can be nullified. The plan is to activate a pneumatic hammer as close as possible to the center of Newton's procedure and have the computer read a seismograph and run the hammer at a cancelling frequency, eliminating the gateway between universes. Walter also warns that the intensity of the vibrational waves might be powerful enough to tear a man apart.

When
Shape Shifter Interference
the team arrives at the bridge, two Boston Police Officers are already in place. Peter tells them they need access to the bridge. One officer says he needs to check with his supervising officer first. Olivia notices the man uses his cell phone, and not a tactical radio. She immediately shoots the other officer in the head, then fires at one trying to make the phone call. The one she shot oozes mercury, confirming the two are the shape-shifters sent by Newton a few minutes earlier. Olivia and the shape-shifter exchange fire, reload and continue a gun battle as Walter watches from Olivia's vehicle loaded with his equipment. Walter starts the FBI vehicle and races ahead through the gun battle towards the edge of the bridge. Peter is caught in the crossfire and stays behind cover. Walter makes it through the gun battle unharmed and to the edge of the condemned Andrews Avenue Bridge. Newton sees Walter arrive, checks his watch and returns to his monitor to see what progress has been made. The harmonic rods at the bank, morgue and powerpole are all beginning to glow brighter. The bridge under Walter starts to shake roughly.

ACT VI

Time approaches to establish the
Trying To Activate Counter-Harmonics
gateway between universes
Aligning Universal Harmonics
as Newton monitors his equipment on his side of the river, and Walter works to set-up his countermeasure equipment on the opposite side. Peter and Olivia are pinned behind the police cruiser because of pistol fire. Olivia checks her watch and tells Peter she thinks Walter won't establish the counter harmonics in time. Peter decides to risk the gunfire and races from cover towards Walter's position. Olivia follows and fires her weapon at the shape-shifting policeman and she runs after Peter. Peter arrives at Walter's position unharmed and helps unload the equipment with Walter. Newton sees that the Bishops are making progress and calls the shape-shifter battling Olivia to tell him to get the Bishops off of the bridge. As it heads of towards the Bishops, Olivia shoots it dead.
Broyles arrives in his car with additional agents, joins Olivia, and they run to assist the Bishops. As Walter's equipment starts to operate, a major vibration shakes the bridge structure. Walter immediately checks his computer and determines that the procedure is not working. Peter notes that something is wrong with the frequency-recognition program, and that he can fix it. As Olivia arrives with help, Peter warns everyone to leave the bridge. Walter is reluctant to go, but does. Peter remains with a single agent, trying to repair the malfunctioning equipment. As more vibrations shake the area,
Mr. Secretary Exits Bridge As It Is Disrupted
Newton appears to have succeeded when a shimmering vision of the bridge from the alternate universe appears. Peter finds and repairs a loose connector in his equipment, then looks out on the forming bridge and sees the faint image of a man standing in the middle. The agent with Peter sees the man too and aims his weapon at him. A loud piercing noise hurts both of them. As Peter asks him his status, the agent dissolves into thin air. The faint image of the man on the bridge walks away from Peter and reaches Newton's side of the river just as Walter's countermeasure disrupts the bridge from forming, returning it to the alternate universe. The shockwave sends Peter flying backward against the grill of his own vehicle and he loses consciousness.

In the hospital, Peter awakens after being out of it for a day and a half. Olivia is waiting by his side and welcomes him back. She tells him the doctors say he will be fine, and that Walter is worried. As she leaves to retrieve Walter, Peter asks to talk to Walter alone. Walter quickly joins Peter and is excited at his good health. Peter tells Walter about the man he saw on the bridge. He reminds his father of his warning about the devastion of the vibrations, and how the FBI man disintegrated into thin air. Peter knows that because the man on the bridge did not die, and because he himself did not die... he must be from the other side too... that Walter took him from over there. Walter reminds Peter that he was dying over there, but Peter is certain that the guilt his mother felt is why she committed suicide after he left home. Peter tells Walter that he is not his son, and wants to be alone. Walter timidly obliges the request.

In
Identity Thief
Thomas Newton's makeshift laboratory, he tends to the medical recovery of the man from the bridge that he brought over from the other side. He uses a syringe to add a drug to the I.V. drip of the man he calls Mister Secretary. The man seems to be in quiet pain, and his breathing is labored, but Newton assures him that he should be able to sleep for a while, and when he wakes up, he should be stabilized. The man from the other side takes Newton's hand firmly, thankfully, and Newton nods at the man confidently, in return.

At the Bishop house, Astrid tends to Walter as he appears to have made baked goods for Peter and is preparing to deliver them. Astrid cautions him about the time-of-day and that Peter is probably still sleeping. Walter is intent on the visit and asks if she is going to drive him, or is he going to have to call a cab? Olivia arrives and is let in the front door by Astrid. Somberly, Olivia tells Walter that Peter checked himself out of the hospital three hours prior, and that he isn't at the Lab or answering his phone. He's gone.

Quotes

"It would be easier if you don't try to talk just yet, Mister Secretary. You see, despite the preparation, crossing over is quite an ordeal on your body, and, uh, the consequences are unpredictable." - Thomas Newton (to the "The Man From The Other Side" as he recovers from passing through the gateway between universes)

"Now as I've said before, the two universes vibrate at different frequencies. So we set up three harmonic rods arranged as an equilateral triangle and then activated the rods. When the car began to vibrate at just the right frequency... that's how we sent Belly's car to the other side. And it's exactly what Newton did with the building." - Walter (to the science team about how items of similar mass can be exchanged between universes)
