Some higher power is setting the Pattern events off in a particular order, in order to obtain an ultimate good (eg. the most people to survive the war between universes).

1. In The Plateau, the Olivia's had been switched - each one pretending to be the other (through differing methods). Milo Stanfield had predicted Olivia's death, and set off the chain of events that would result in her crushing by cinder blocks. However, since it was Olivia from Over Here who did not know the "amber diamond" protocol, she ignored the warning, creating a new set of probabilities that Milo could not predict.
