That was a small typo which was a key plot event. Great job spotting it! User:Robinabo/sig 17:33, 11 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] USA Template and Great Seal

I uploaded US-GreatSeal-Obverse.png as an experiment with a USA template. In the end I decided the flag looked better. I don't need the Great Seal graphic anymore.

When I was finished, I had to REM out the following from USA because it caused an extraneous "{" to appear on my user page. I can't figure out what the PAGENAME parameter does. The template works with the REMd out code over on LP, where I "borrowed" it.

<includeonly> </includeonly>

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 19:14, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

The extraneous "{" in the template was the result of my have fat-fingered the code.

Now that I've got that one unscrewed, are there any other national templates I can build for you?

[edit] Erasing pages

Is Special:Contributions/User:Johnlocke authorized to erase personal pages page content?--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 13:30, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the block and for the offer. I'd like to try doing that.--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 14:07, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Challenges

Two things come to mind:

 • How do you cause a theory page to be created? Maybe the first question should be, "Do you want theory pages?" Virtually my entire experience with wiki is at the Lostpedia. At the LP, they distinguish between theory and talk, at least "in theory. <smile>" If you can cause a theory page to be automatically created, how do you cause the theory tab to appear at the top of the main page? I did some searches through midiawiki and help and didn't get any hints.
 • What do we want the title of the show to look like on our pages? Options are
 1. Fringe
 2. Fringe
 3. Fringe
 4. Fringe
and I may have missed some. I lean toward number 4, but I'm not paying the bill! We can create a template name frnge defined as you pick it . Misspelling "frnge" makes it easy to search for typed raw entries. People will either love it or hate it; if they hate it enough we can throw it out. It won't be that hard if we're only a couple of episodes deep.

[edit] Pilot

Below is the text of notes I dropped on two users who had edited Pilot. Maybe we'll get some response. please take a look at an the Manual of Style.

Thanks for your input today. If you have anything to add to the rest of the articles, please jump in.

I've created an almost empty Manual of Style. Please take a look then go to the talk (discussion) page and add ideas or argue about the existing ones as much as you want.

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 22:37, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] User Since

I just dropped a "User Since" logo on your user page; If you don't want it there, please remove it or yell at me <grin>.

If you want to display the USA logo USA.

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 20:00, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Colors

Yeah, they're a little bright! I started with the idea of a traffic light, but I know they're off. Are you talking about the colors you're using for frames on Main?

They are at Template:Green, Template:Yellow and Template:Red, btw. Of course green could really be purple.... I'll get to it this evening, but if you have something that grabs you, send me the six digits.

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 21:52, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

[edit] September

Good research on the September thing. I had the theory parked in the back of my head that there are twelve observers. Oh, well. Did you notice the posts on Phillip Broyles and Talk:Phillip Broyles about Broyles being bald?--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 19:49, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] The Cow

Hello, Dennis. Great work here. I am wondering if you've considered adding the cow to the Main Characters section. --Tbone1225 00:42, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Maybe in the recurring characters section. Gene is not in every episode. -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  02:23, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Fringepedia:To Do List

Hmm... I see that you deleted stuff from the to do list, that wasn't done... Howcome? --Pierre 14:14, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

Sorry, I didn't realize anyone else was using it. The two things that were on there are more Sysop type activities anyways - not for the general public. If you want, make a separate list for Admins. I wanted to have a simpler list for new people, that involves "manual labor" (i.e. adding content), not necessarily extensive Wiki knowledge. -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  14:53, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Well.. to separate "general" maintenance from sysop maintenance isn't really wiki, is it? If the general user has the time, interest and knowledge in wiki editing, her/his contribution should be welcome, right? Otherwise we're drifting quite far away from the wiki approach.
They may have the interest/time/knowledge, but they don't have the permission to change certain things that only Sysops can change, like LocalSetting.php -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  16:36, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
When/if the day comes when the to do list grows out of proportions, a separation could be discussed, but at the moment, there really isn't any point... Pierre 15:22, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
That's fine. They can all be on the same page, since regular users may suggest things that only a Sysop can change, but maybe we could have a separate section? -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  16:36, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Users that doesn't have permission still would benefit from knowing what is going on. Also - we can't assume that the person wanting the change is aware of if its a sysop change or a general change - to have different lists will most certainly mean more work for sysops and other established users, who will have to move the 'to do's to the "correct" list. Separate section - yeah... maybe - but it won't save the established users from the work that it means to "move around" stuff between the sections.... Pierre 16:46, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Welcoming suggestion

Please see Fringepedia:Ideas#Welcoming for my suggestion for a welcoming template - it would be good if we could put it into action ASAP. Cheers! --Pierre 15:41, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

I added the Template:Welcome to every user who have signed up for the competition, and every other user active since Oct.15 (including sysops and myself). If there still is some improvement needed, it could easily be done still. Pierre 20:17, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Image:Gene.jpg

Regarding pictures in general - its crucial that we include the proper licensing when we upload new files (in the case of Gene.jpg TV-screenshot. Also - in order to keep track of the images and keeping the standard of Fringepedia, we should always remember to put screenshots in the proper episode category, i.e. Category: 101 images. I'm not sure which episode you took Gene.jpg from, so please add it :) Thnx! --Pierre 21:43, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

OK, do we have the listing of all the license tags and image categories somewhere? -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  21:53, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Jim is currently working on the license tag. The basic rules is that each image get one license tag (a system yet not completed, but you will get the basic idea from looking into Category:Image copyright and use tags).
I addition, most types of images is categorized in one or more categories, in regard to what they feature: Every image taken from an episode is put into the correct category (under Category:Episode images), every image featuring a main character or a recurring character is put into proper category (under Category:Character images). Each image featuring a guest character is to be put into Category:Images of guest characters (which is also included as a sub-cat in Category:Caracter images]]. Images featuring cast or crew should go into :Category:Cast and crew images, and images featuring shots from the comics should go into Category:Comics images. I'm also about to create :Category:Location images and :Category:Item images, corresponding to sub-cats of Category:Fringe Universe. --Pierre 22:03, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
All ten copyright tags are now to be found at Help:Image Tags (as well as Category:Image copyright and use tags). It is crucial that every image on Fringepedia are marked with one (not more, not less) of this tags. Adding a copyright tag will automatically put the image in the proper category at Category:Images by copyrights. Hopefully this will help :) --Pierre 12:44, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Eh... Howcome I was "banned" from being an Observer???? Pierre 22:12, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Spaghetti Cat

Are you doing anything with "the cat," his picture and his theories?--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 17:00, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

No, you can delete it -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  18:04, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Observer?

I think 4LeafClover misunderstands?--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:43, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

[edit] images categories and copyright

Please put the proper copyright tag on images when uploading them! Especially as a sysop, it's of huge importance that you do this, so that others can take after you! Even if you don't feel like putting the files into proper episodic and character categories, you really gotta get around to do this. At the end of the day, it is in our interest to keep this wiki within the boundaries of the law. --Pierre 02:02, 13 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Copyright

Template:Copyright is nice work. (I dropped this on Pierre's page first. I didn't see your name at creation point!)--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 02:15, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks! When I get more time, I have a bunch of things I want to go through and clean up.

[edit] Other Wikis

Among other things, I liked Dune. So I joined the Dune wiki, where not very much is happening. They have a sysop on a temporary ban; strange stuff!--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 18:54, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Special Characters

I've tried several times to use &mdash/&ndash or &emdash/&endash on pages and doesn't work. Does it require an extension not yet loaded?--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 23:30, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

So simple. Matches my intellect! <smile> Thanks.--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:12, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Ideas

There are two new pages subbed to Fringepedia:Ideas. You may notice that I moved six items from Fringepedia:Ideas to Fringepedia:Ideas/Accepted. I didn't know what to do with the URL exchange. There is also a Fringepedia:Ideas/Rejected page.--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 21:22, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Safe - Transcript

If you are holding back on the last bit of transcript from last night, because I started hacking on it, don't. My service dropped the raw captioning from the start of final segment. You can drop near Act 6 (if you have it) and I (we) can incorporate the bits that were missed. -- My captioning bounced for a few seconds during the Walter speech at the beginning and again, a little later on. So I don't have the visual transcript as a guide... It's tough figuring-out 20 seconds of "Walter-speak" by ear! There is a part during the Oliva chase too, where CaptionMax simply cheated off of the script and was not even close to the actual sound track. Cheers -- –DocH 22:31, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Promotion

I noticed that I was a SysOp for a while. Just wanted to say that I am willing to become a SysOp. --Pierre 22:15, 6 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Administrator List

I built a list of administrators/Observers here: Fringepedia:Administrators. If you like it, I'll ask Pierre and DocH to fill in their blanks.--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:45, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Pierre

User:Pierre - Oh, well. I've been watching User:Labgo--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 00:27, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] javascript

I guess user javascript (stored in User:username/monobook.js) is not enabled on this site, am I right? Too bad. I wrote a script to facilitate name assignment in transcript (for Internet Explorer as it stands now). Basically, when you type the first letter of the name of one of the main eight characters and hold down the key, it writes the name of the character followed by a colon and a space (i.e. WALTER: , OLIVIA: , PETER: , etc.) instead of repeating the letter. I tried it on Wikipedia and it works well (but is useless there of course). It would have been nice when working on Fringe transcripts. --User:Labgo/sig 02:23, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Did you come to any conclusions on this item? It would be a nice tool to have when we start transcripts again. Thanks.--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:30, 5 January 2009 (UTC)

Two questions, boss.

 • Whose product is (the site not our page)?
 • Is canon?

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:36, 26 December 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Main Page Link

You do know that just repeating the last link does not take you to the new link?

4011 & B001FW58D6 are the previous links - ya have to wait for the new ones to be published - to be accurate... –DocH my edits

I'll update them when the new links go live. It's looks like some of the old links are bad too... I'll fix them all in the AM -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  06:53, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

I only mention it because I went back and fixed a half dozen of the repeats I found a few days ago (did the research - tough on low bandwidth). –DocH my edits

I think what needs to be done is tweak the template, so if there is no link, the button doesn't show up... -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  22:54, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Gallery

What happened to - ? - I haven't seen a screenshot from there since ep 114. –DocH my edits

The guy that runs it is a slacker! I'll see if I can figure it out and post some screenshots ASAP. Thanks! -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  23:16, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
In the mean time, if there is anything particular you need, just send me an email and I'll upload it -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  23:16, 16 April 2009 (UTC)
- Huh (giggle), a slacker? Aren't we all. Just choose a "thoughtful" pic for each ACT in 115 and 116 and upload. I'll trim/cap them if you want. Time for a vacation too. Out to the Playa for a week... followed by a week in the theater watching sneak-premieres of the new Star Trek. Come on, you know that'd be the best two weeks ever. [;^) –DocH my edits

[edit] Comics

Hey, Dennis,

The Comics section seems to have crashed and burned. We never have gotten the pages from the last item. Sometimes, I get a little uncomfortable about the reationale behind the uploaded pages. When we do screencaps, we capture an instant in time. The copies of the entire comic seem to interpretable as "heavily borrowing the author's creativity." If we can't do it all, why do any of it?

--User:Jim in Georgia/sig 01:59, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] EpisodeTitle

Episode title for Peter must keep the added sign Ῥeter to ensure that 216 works properly to produce a link to the episode: Peter

(I hate this pseudo title!)

 • I agree this is a terrible way to handle this. Where did the concept of adding an apostrophe come from? I think from now on the link "Peter" should direct to the episode, and there should be text at the top of the page saying "For the character, see Peter Bishop.", like how it is handled on Wikipedia: Miami Vice
- Hate is a strong word. Clarify your dislike. plz. The episode page Peter will be one of a hundred some day and grow into obscurity. However, the Peter page is linked to by everyone of those episode pages, and dozen of others. As it is now, the way I arranged it a few weeks ago, it will save hours+ of work and deconfliction over the length of the series. If you can find a special character that is a "mirror" of P... that would be better yet -- suggesting the alt (mirror) universe. If you guys vote to change, so be it. I will abide... extra hours and deconflicting as required. -- –DocH my edits 06:17, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think Labgo was referring to hating the "peter" title. "Peters" would have been a better title IMO.
- I strongly disagree with this approach. Not only does it look bad, but it creates unfriendly URLs ( The default "Peter" page isn't even being used, it's just a redirect to "Peter Bishop". If people want a "Peter" link to go to the "Peter Bishop" page, they can do it like this: Peter -- Dennis  Talk  Contribs  06:22, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
- URL? Who cares. Users/readers are going to navigate to that ep page using nav bar, episode guide and ep|### templates - the odd character is buried in a template -- within a template. No one will ever have to type the odd character (=Step Saver). Being sent to a page that asks "did you mean character or episode (=Step Adder). Taking away the "Peter Bishop" and "Peter REDIR" (=Work Adder). -- –DocH my edits 06:33, 2 April 2010 (UTC)
Who cares? How about Google. This kills searchabilty. The title also displays improperly in most browser title bars, substituting an square box in place of the P. It's just unacceptable IMO.
I think you misinterpreted my suggestion on redirects. I don't think "Peter" should be a disambiguation page, it should be the episode page, with a link at the top to "Peter Bishop" like my Miami Vice example above. No one suggested taking away the "Peter Bishop" page, in fact, this should be the preferred way to call that characters page. Since a referenced page only need to be linked once per page, the initial reference to the Character should be to "Peter Bishop" anyways.
- As you know I had modified the Peter page earlier to make it the episode page because I believe episode title should have priority over other pages, particularly redirects. I had started to modify links to the original Peter character page by using the full page name in places where only Peter was used: Peter. I still have the same opinion, that the episode page be called Peter. --User:Labgo/sig 13:04, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

[edit] New to Fringepedia, please a little help

Hi Dennis, As i'm new to Fringepedia, i've been having trouble adding a picture and comment on the site. I may have found a next episode clue (in 205 for 206) but i somehow couldn't find a way to properly add it onto the actual Next_Episode_Clue page, in order for it to appear in stead of the Question.png ... i've read the help page, but i couldn't really get it... could you please guide me through this? PS - so far, my contribution is here: File:FringeClues206.jpg Sebou--Sebou 10:45, 15 December 2010 (MST)
